Due to university, I didn’t do a write up for last week. However, Music Monday is back
Another Day in America begins with a lofi-style guitar track
as Kali Uchis commences singing her childlike melody. Based on “America” from the
musical West Side Story, this section is laced with sarcasm. Not in the lyrics,
they are quite clear, but in the music. It builds up until it hits a bass drop
into a simple sub-bass section, overlayed with “money, greed”.
Ozuna sings his section in Spanish, over a light mix of
synth effects guitar and bass. I particularly like the entry of the backing
pads interspersed with silence. It gives a jagged effect to a simultaneously smooth
mix. Kali Uchis sings the chorus again over a more driving beat, but instead of
ending into a bass drop, it heads into a bridge, rapped in passive aggression.
Back to the chourus the vocals sit atop a sidechained pulsating bass, after
which the song cools down into a fade out.
This song is fantastic in terms of its juxtapositions. Like
the original “America””, it is critical of the USA, but is a quintessentially American
song.
