MUSIC MONDAY 4 - IT'S YOUR MOVE

Woah, that last article was a lot wasn’t it. Back to music

This week I will be telling you a story of adaptation, and so I will be presenting these tracks in order of release.

First up we have the original It’s Your Move, by Doug Parkinson: https://youtu.be/VqHCjkEJ4CU

Parkinson is an Australian pop rock singer and prolific songwriter who is most well known for his cover of The Beatles “Dear Prudence”. This recording demonstrates a fantastic funky syncopation. The verses begin in major as he tells us the story of a troubled romance, but descends into the relative minor, with airy minor seventh chords as Parkinson makes his demand that his lover “makes a move”. The backing vocals are a delight as are the synth pads which herald the chorus.

If there is anything I want to say about this recording, it is that for a song of its era, it is extraordinarily sparse. The drums are dry, with plenty of space between hits, and there is little in between the bass and vocal. This combines to create a sound that it is impossible not to want to finish listening to.

Final Rating: (7/10)

What happens to album tracks from little known Australian singers? Why, they get covered by Motown Legend Diana Ross: https://youtu.be/vtlgWW8L8f4

Whilst staying true to the source, Ross and guest guitarist Nile Rogers innovate the song into a new wave classic. A synth bass and keyboard pads heavily feature alongside Ross’s harmonies, a strong departure from the sparse Parkinson original. The pattering keyboards in the background of most of the song add a bit of momentum to the performance.

Final Rating: (7/10)

Well, I suspect by now you will have picked up on what this song ultimately became in it’s next transformation, none other than the seminal work of vaporwave music: https://youtu.be/aQkPcPqTq4M

Chip, chopped and slowed down, it truly is a classic. Many on YouTube have made videos breaking down this track, so I won’t say much, but I particularly love the dynamism provided by the shaker, as well as the slowdown outro.

Final Rating: (7/10)

Funny that, I gave all versions similar ratings.
