ELIZABETH STREET NAME CHANGE

ELIZABETH STREET NAME CHANGE

Sources have uncovered a plan to rename what some consider the 3rd or 4th "most main" street in Melbourne - and it is all to do with the queen herself.

Elizabeth Street in the evening

Whilst many in Australia have stridently argued for a republic, the sudden passing of Prince Philip in the past year took many by surprise; leading calls to reconsider what happens when Elizabeth II passes away. Media have published many stories about Operation London Bridge. What is less well known, is that there are equivalents to this in the colonies, and right here in Melbourne, a key part of the process is renaming the street which bears her majesty's name. It would be considered disrespectful for the family to have such a visible reminder of their deceased matriarch - in the center of a major city.

Anonymous sources claim that the City of Melbourne is undertaking secret consultation sessions to determine the most appropriate name. Whilst unpopular, Camilla Street is likely the preferred option of the royal family, to honour the new queen. However respondents have favored Diana Street, but sources claim this is unlikely to be the name. A surprise suggestion from individuals which partook in the consultation was Slow Tram Street. This is also an unlikely choice, given that Collins Street is typically a bit slower.
